This is an 11 section entry level course that will leave you prepared to handle wilderness medical emergencies at a basic level. This course is designed/taught by medical professionals that practice medicine regularly in the wilderness.

  • Subjects Covered: Legal Aspects of Wilderness Medicine, Preventing and Caring for Injuries, Shock, Wilderness Wound Care, Burns, Injuries to Bones and Joints, Head and Spinal Injuries, Eye and Facial Injuries, Chest and Abdominal Injuries, Environmental Hazards, Hyperthermia, Hypothermia, Altitude Illnesses, Lightning Strike, Mosquitoes, Ticks, Disease, Bees, Wasps, Spiders, Venomous Snakes, Medical Problems in the Wilderness, and Wilderness First Aid Kits

  • Skills Performed: Patient Assessment Methods, Medication Administration, Splinting Fractures, Slinging Dislocations, Bleeding Control, Thermoregulation, Spinal Immobilization, and Performing Patient Assessments.


 
 

WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDEr

This is an advanced course. This course will leave you prepared to handle wilderness medical emergencies at an advanced level. This course is designed/taught by medical professionals that practice medicine regularly in the wilderness.

  • Course includes 48 hours of Continuing Education for EMR, EMT, AEMT and EMT-P

  • Basic Bleeding Control Certification included (BleedingControl.org)

  • 2 year certification

  • AHA BLS CPR is included in this course

  • Medical equipment will be provided

  • $700 - $850 per person (dependent on location)

  • $500 for current Search and Rescue Personnel and National Parks Staff

  • Subjects Covered: (In addition to the Wilderness First Aid Curriculum) Legal Aspects of Wilderness Medicine, Preventing and Caring for Injuries, Shock, Wilderness Wound Care, Burns, Injuries to Bones and Joints, Oxygen Administration, Head and Spinal Injuries, Eye and Facial Injuries, Chest and Abdominal Injuries, Environmental Hazards, Hyperthermia, Hypothermia, Creating USGS Maps, Altitude Illness, Lightning Strike, Mosquitoes, Ticks, Disease, Bees, Wasps, Spiders, Venomous Snakes, Disinfecting Water Supplies, Medical Problems in the Wilderness, Interacting with Search and Rescue and Wilderness First Aid Kits.

  • Skills Performed: Patient Assessments, Full and Half Day Scenarios, Spinal Immobilization/Extrication, Evacuation techniques, Traction Splinting, Blood Pressure by Palpation/Auscultation, Pulse Oximetry, Medication Administration, Creating USGS Maps, Reducing Dislocations, Improvised Splinting Techniques, Glucometer, Oropharyngeal Airways, Nasopharyngeal Airways, Oxygen Administration and Splinting Techniques.

EMT SKILLS VERIFICATION

  • This verification is valid for 2 years and can be applied for recertification of current EMT license

  • Skills testing can take up to 8 hours

  • NREMT/LEMSA requirements state that instruction must be provided with each skill performed.

  • We can provide a preparatory course for the skills evaluation upon request

  • $135 per recertification

    • Trauma Assessment

    • Medical Assessment

    • Bag-Valve-Mask Ventilation

    • Oxygen Administration

    • Cardiac Arrest Management with AED

    • Hemorrhage Control and Shock Management

    • Spinal Motion Restriction - Supine and Seated

    • Penetrating Chest Injury

    • Epinephrine and Naloxone Administration

    • Childbirth and Neonatal Resuscitation

Orange County Emergency Medical Services EMT Accreditation Course

  • 4 hour course including 1 hour of skills testing

  • This course provides 4 hours of continuing education

  • $85 per student registered

  • Ektos Unlimited is a certified accreditation course provider approved by OCEMS

  • Each student must pass the 25 question OCEMS exam with an 80% or better

  • Each student must show proficiency in the following skills:

    • Suctioning of a tracheostomy and endotracheal tube 

    • Glucometer use 

    • MDI administration 

    • Auto-injector administration 

    • 12-lead ECG placement 

    • IV preparation and monitoring 

    • Use of tourniquets 

    • Spinal motion restriction
